Relying on previously unseen materials, the film provides an insider’s account of the hunt for former Gestapo officer and war criminal Klaus Barbie. It retraces his long-planned abduction, from the diplomatic maneuvers that led to it in 1983 to his trial.
Klaus Barbie holds a singular place on the grim list of Nazi officials who occupied France. Known as the “Butcher of Lyon,” he was the man who tortured Jean Moulin—Prefect of the Republic and iconic leader of the National Council of the Resistance. He was also responsible for orchestrating the roundup of the children of Izieu on April 6, 1944—an event that ultimately allowed him to be prosecuted in France for crimes against humanity.
Through testimonies from those in France, Bolivia, and Germany who authorized and coordinated his arrest, extradition, and prosecution, the film follows the key stages of this dramatic turn of events. It is based, among other sources, on documents recently declassified by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the West German intelligence services, and the U.S. Department of Justice.
