Fight for the Pachamama
Tinku is a fertility ritual that takes the form of a ceremonial fight. The blood shed during this ritual is believed to nourish Pachamama, the Earth goddess, who ensures good harvests, fertility for women, and the abundance of llama herds. This practice is a direct legacy of the Inca civilization, which ruled these lands over 500 years ago. Back then, hand-to-hand combat was organized to spill blood and fertilize Pachamama. This tradition has endured through the centuries.
Five hours’ walk from Macha, at over 4,000 meters above sea level, anthropologist Anne-Sylvie Malbrancke joins the Kallengera, a Quechua community of about sixty people.
The Tinku will begin in a few hours, and the entire village is getting ready.
Brama scouted the area and secured the communities’ permissions in a challenging context.
