The stalking
Klaus Barbie sent over 7,500 Jews to concentration camps and tortured or deported 14,000 French Resistance fighters, including their leader, Jean Moulin. His extraordinary escape reveals the murky backstage dealings of the Cold War and its cynical alliances. Recruited as a CIA agent, he was exfiltrated to Latin America, where he became part of a network of former Nazis, serving as an arms trafficker and torturer for various dictators. Involved in the hunt for Che Guevara, an agent of the German intelligence services, and an organizer of coups financed by drug lords, he was finally tracked down in Bolivia by Beate and Serge Klarsfeld in 1971. Yet, it would take another ten years before he was extradited to France. In 1987, in Lyon, Barbie was sentenced to life imprisonment for 17 crimes against humanity. He died in prison.
